Cellulite Treatments
Cellulite is one of the most common cosmetic problems. It is characterized by unaesthetic lumpy dimpled flesh, called "orange peel" because of its characteristic structure. Cellulite is caused by the accumulation of fat deposits under the skin, which clumps together to form lumps and dimples on the skin's surface.
Cellulite does not cause pain or threaten the patient's health, but it causes the skin to worsen gradually if left untreated.
Who is affected by cellulite?
Cellulite is most common in women and rarely affects men. It is estimated that up to 80% of women have cellulite at varying stages. The appearance of cellulite is favored by genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, excess weight, improper diet, and low physical activity.
Where does cellulite appear?
Cellulite is most common around the thighs and buttocks, but it can also appear on the abdomen, arms, and other body parts.
What are the causes of cellulite?
The most common causes of cellulite include as follows:
- Genetic predisposition - the speed of metabolism, the distribution of fat under the skin, and the circulatory system's work are factors responsible for the development of cellulite.
- Improper diet - a low-fiber diet and excessive consumption of carbohydrates, fats, and salt increase the risk of developing cellulite.
- Lack of physical activity - A sedentary lifestyle or prolonged standing causes stagnation of blood and lymph in the legs, which leads to swelling of the subcutaneous tissue and the development of cellulite.
- Abnormal bodyweight - being overweight is a major factor in making the skin more prone to the development of cellulite.
- Hormonal factors - estrogen, insulin, norepinephrine levels, thyroid hormone, and prolactin levels- play a role in cellulite formation. Furthermore, hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause frequently contribute to the development of cellulite in women.
- Age - the risk of developing cellulite increases with age; as well as, the natural decrease in collagen levels in skin cells.
What are the stages of cellulite?
Cellulite is divided into three main stages depending on the clinical severity of the skin lesions.
- Stage 1 is the mild form of skin lesions. Few dimples appear on the skin, causing a slight rugosity of the skin surface. The skin appears to be slightly flabby. Cellulite is only visible when you squeeze a fold of skin.
- Stage 2 is the moderate form of cellulite. More dimples appear on the skin, and a granular structure is visible on the skin's surface. At this stage, cellulite is visible when you squeeze a fold of skin and, in the case of thigh changes, when you sit on a hard surface.
- Stage 3 is the advanced form of skin lesions. There are numerous large dimples on the skin. Skin folds and irregularities are visible to the naked eye, even when the skin is not squeezed.
How to treat cellulite?
There are numerous methods for treating cellulite, ranging from physical activity and applying creams and ointments at home to treatment with specialized devices in a clinic for aesthetic medicine. Therapies differ in mechanism of action, effectiveness, and invasiveness. The treatment method depends on the severity of the skin changes and the results the patient wants to achieve.
The most effective methods include:
- Acoustic wave therapy - massage of the area affected by cellulite with a special head emitting acoustic waves
- Onda Therapy - a therapy combining two technologies: breaking down fat cells using cold microwaves and a stimulating effect on collagen fibers.
- Endermologie LPG Aliance - therapy with a device that mechanically massages the fat tissue in the areas of cellulite.
- Carboxytherapy - is a method involving the injection of carbon dioxide under the skin.
- Radiofrequency - radio waves heat the skin and subcutaneous tissue, which causes collagen shrinkage. As a result, the skin is smoothed and tightened, and its tension is improved.
- Ultrasound - ultrasound waves break up and liquefy fat tissue. A lymphatic drainage massage supports the treatment to drain the liquefied fat through the lymphatic vessels.
