Treatment of alopecia

Hair loss is a natural process. A healthy person loses 50 to 100 hairs every day and new hairs grow in their place. The problem arises when more and more skin is visible between the hairs, the parting gets visibly wider and the hair loses its hardness and shine. This means that an unnatural amount of hair is lost, which is not only an aesthetic problem but also a health one. Currently there are effective methods of hair loss treatment, which we successfully apply in the Zakrzewscy Clinic.

What is alopecia

Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss. Alopecia may be diffuse or localized in one area, caused by hair loss, poor hair quality, or thinning hair. Alopecia may be accompanied by skin disease.

Who is affected by hair loss

The problem of alopecia can affect anyone of any age, be an isolated problem or associated with another disease. Depending on the cause, alopecia is temporary or permanent.

Causes of excessive hair loss

There are many causes of excessive hair loss. Very often alopecia is caused by abnormal hormonal balance in the body, the so-called androgenic alopecia. In case of women, hormonal changes are related to hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, menopause, too high level of androgens or prolactin and too low level of estrogens. In men, androgenic alopecia is caused by elevated levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Other causes of alopecia include:

  • increased hair loss, so-called alopecia telogenal
  • slowed hair growth, known as anagenetic alopecia,
  • congenital or acquired hair defects
  • inflammatory skin disease that damages or destroys the hair follicle, such as seborrheic dermatitis, fungal infection, psoriasis
  • improper diet, especially deficiencies of protein, vitamins and trace elements
  • improper care of the scalp and hair, for example, too frequent dyeing of the hair
  • exposing hair to high temperatures, strong cosmetics
  • chronic stress
  • systemic diseases
  • side effect of medication use.

Symptoms of alopecia

A symptom of alopecia is excessive hair loss leading to thinning and a significant reduction in hair density (alopecia telogenal). On the head there may also appear hairless patches (alopecia areata), hairline circles above the forehead or thinning hair on the crown of head (androgenic alopecia). Often, before we observe hair loss on the head, we notice that a lot more hair than before remains on the comb and in the bathtub during shampooing.

Androgenic alopecia among women

Androgenic alopecia affects 40% of women over the age of 50. It is characterized by diffuse thinning of hair on the head due to increased hair loss and/or reduction in hair volume. Androgenic alopecia is associated with disturbances in the hormonal balance of the body, so it often affects women during pregnancy, breastfeeding or menopause. A woman’s genetic predisposition has a large role in androgenic alopecia.

Androgenic alopecia among men

Androgenic alopecia is the most common type of diffuse hair thinning and alopecia among men. It is caused by hormones (androgens) and genetic predisposition. It is characterized by a receding hairline and hair loss on the top and front of the head. Androgenic alopecia in men is genetically determined by a sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in certain areas of the scalp.

Alopecia telogenal

Alopecia telogenal is when there is a marked increase in the number of hairs falling out each day, usually over the entire scalp. In the early stages, hair thickness decreases, resulting in a less voluminous hairstyle. Sometimes alopecia telogenal is accompanied by tenderness and altered sensations in the scalp. Increased hair loss in alopecia telogenal is due to disruption of the natural hair cycle. Common triggers for this type of alopecia include childbirth, severe trauma or illness, a stressful life event, significant weight loss, medications or discontinuation of hormone therapy. Sometimes the cause remains unknown.

Effects of excessive hair loss

Many studies have shown that hair loss is not only an aesthetic issue, but also causes significant psychological stress. People affected by hair loss often have low self-esteem, feel unattractive, and even experience depression because of it. All these factors cause problems in daily functioning. Therefore, when you notice the first signs of excessive hair loss, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist and start treatment.

Can alopecia be cured?

The methods and effectiveness of treatment for excessive hair loss depend on the causes of condition. If alopecia is caused by a poor diet, illness or improper care of the scalp, it is often enough to change eating habits, apply appropriate treatment of skin lesions or change hair care cosmetics to stop the alopecia process. However, it is not always possible to stop alopecia using only the above mentioned methods. Sometimes the body cannot cope with excessive hair loss on its own. Then professional support in the form of advanced therapy aimed at restoring the health of hair and scalp is required. Excessive hair loss should not be underestimated as it may be a sign of a serious health problem, which requires a diagnosis.

How to treat excessive hair loss

Alopecia telogenal usually resolves completely without treatment within a few months. The natural duration of telogen (resting phase) is about 100 days (3 to 6 months), after which time the hair begins to grow back. However, depending on the length of hair, it may take many months before the hair volume gradually returns to normal. Alopecia telogenal can return, especially if the cause has not been removed.

In androgenic alopecia, the goal of treatment is to stop or slow the progression of hair loss. Therapy often includes hormonal treatment, laser treatments, and hair transplantation. In men, micropigmentation (tattooing) can be done so that the skin on the head looks shaved.

In addition, it is recommended to quit smoking, switch to a healthy diet containing iron, protein, fresh fruits and vegetables, and take appropriate dietary supplements, especially iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid.
