Condylomas
Condylomas (other names include venereal warts, genital warts) are soft growths on the skin of genitals that occur in both men and women. Condylomas are caused by the HPV virus and are one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases.
Condylomas are very contagious, which is why dermatological treatment should be started as soon as possible. Untreated skin lesions can grow causing unsightly changes that negatively affect the psyche and often prevent sexual intercourse. In addition, they can lead to serious health complications.
What condylomas look like?
Condylomas take the form of small papules that may occur singly or cluster together. The papules can vary in size, are raised or flat. Most often they are light pink, less often brown. Untreated, they take the form of cauliflower-shaped lesions that can cover a significant area of genital skin.
In men the lesions occur most often on the glans (mainly under the foreskin), on the central part of penis, sometimes also on the skin of the scrotum and within the urethra. In women, skin lesions occur mainly in the perineal area and labia. If left untreated, condylomas can extend from the perineum all the way to the anus.
Condylomas are rarely accompanied by pain or itching. However, when the skin lesions are caused by a HPV type with a high cancer potential, symptoms such as itching, burning, and purulent discharge may appear over time. These types of symptoms require immediate medical attention.
Causes of condylomas on genitals
Infection with HPV, the virus that causes genital condyloma, most often occurs during sexual contact. Transmission can also occur when people use the same underwear, towels, or other personal hygiene items.
Most people with HPV are not aware they carry the virus until they develop symptoms of the disease. It can take months or even years from infection to the appearance of symptoms. For some infected people, the virus remains latent and does not produce visible symptoms. However, even when symptoms are not visible on the skin, a carrier of the virus can infect other people.
Diagnosis of condylomas
Treatment of condylomas is necessary because they are highly contagious, and if left untreated can lead to serious health problems such as urinary disturbances, infiltration of surrounding tissues, and cancer development, among others.
Condylomas are diagnosed based on clinical symptoms and dermatoscopic examination. Sometimes the physician may order a biopsy with histopathological examination to rule out a cancerous lesion.

Treatment of condyloma acuminata
The treatment of condylomas involves outpatient and pharmacologic treatment. The most effective forms of surgical treatment include:

- Cryotherapy – a method of freezing lesions with liquid nitrogen. A side effect of this treatment may be discoloration or scarring.
- Trichloroacetic Acid Therapy, which involves applying a highly corrosive acid to the affected areas. A side effect of this therapy can be deep ulcerations and scarring.
