Viral wart
A viral wart, otherwise known as a wart, is a small growth on the skin caused by infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts are characterized by a hard, keratinous surface with a small black dot in the center. Depending on the type, the viral wart turns white, brown, pink or flesh-colored.
Warts most commonly affect school-aged children, but can also appear in adults, especially those with compromised immune systems. Viral warts are usually located on the palms of hands, fingers and soles of the feet.
Although viral warts are not dangerous to the health and life of the infected person, they can pose a serious aesthetic problem, are highly contagious, and lesions located on the feet often cause pain when walking. Therefore, it is advisable to undertake wart treatment to remove them from the skin as soon as possible.
Types and symptoms of viral warts
There are several types of viral warts depending on the type of HPV virus. The most common include:
- Common warts – take the form of papules with a rough, papillomatous surface ranging in size from 1 mm to over 1 cm. They most commonly appear on the fingers and toes, around the nails, and on the knees,
- Foot warts – are rough, flesh-colored, located on the soles of the feet. They can be of two types: disseminated, deep and painful (myrmecia) or more superficial, less painful so-called mosaic warts,
- Flat warts – are small and have a flat surface. They are most often found in large numbers on the face and hands. They are arranged in lines at the site of a previous injury.
Causes of the appearance of a viral wart on the skin
Viral warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). More than 100 types of the virus are known, leading to varying clinical manifestations of infection. HPV is highly contagious. It spreads through direct contact with infected skin or indirectly, for example, by walking barefoot in public places such as swimming pools and saunas, sharing a towel with a sick person, or wearing the sick person’s shoes. Scratching a wart leads to the spread of virus to other areas of the skin. Children and immunocompromised people are particularly vulnerable to HPV infection.
Treatment of viral warts
Although warts do not pose a threat to the health and life of the infected person, it is worth undertaking their treatment because of:
- high infectiousness of HPV and the easy spread of skin lesions,
- soreness in the case of sole warts,
- unsightly appearance, which can cause mental discomfort and difficulty interacting with others.
There are many treatments for viral warts, but some of the most commonly used include:
- Topical Treatment – use of ointments and creams containing salicylic acid. This therapy requires patience from the Patient, because with regular daily application of ointment or cream, about 70% of the warts disappear within 12 weeks,
- Cryotherapy – freezing warts with liquid nitrogen. A side effect of the therapy is blisters on the skin,
- Electrocoagulation – removal of warts using an electric arc. The treatment leaves scars on the skin,
- Laser Therapy – the most effective method of wart removal that has no side effects.
