Molluscum contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin infection occurring in children and adults that manifests as clusters of round papules that are white, pink, or brown in color. The papules range in size from 1 to 6 mm and have a waxy, shiny surface with a characteristic depression in the center. Inside the molluscum contagiosum is a white, pudgy substance that can be squeezed out. The number of papules visible on the skin of an infected person can range from a few to more than a hundred. The lesions usually appear in warm, moist areas – under the arms, under the knees, and around the genitals. Occasionally they also occur around the mouth, and less often in the oral cavity.

Although molluscum contagiosum does not cause pain, it often causes inflammation of the skin around the lump. Therefore, a person infected with molluscum contagiosum may experience double discomfort from unsightly lumps and red, dry, itchy skin around them.

To minimize the discomfort and risk of complications, it is worth taking dermatological treatment to remove the troublesome lumps from the skin.

Causes of molluscum contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a virus from the smallpox virus group that attacks squamous epithelial cells without penetrating deeper into the body.

The virus is spread by:

  • Direct skin-to-skin contact,
  • Indirect contact as a result of sharing towels and other objects,
  • Transmission of the virus to another place on the skin by scratching or shaving,
  • Transmission of the virus through sexual contact.

Athletes, massage therapists, and people who work and use swimming pools are at particular risk of contracting the molluscum contagiosum virus.

Diagnosis and treatment of molluscum contagiosum

Your physician will diagnose molluscum contagiosum based on its characteristic clinical appearance or by performing a dermatoscopy. A cytologic examination, which consists of a smear of cough-like secretions, also confirms the correct diagnosis.

Virus-induced lesions resolve spontaneously over time, but it is recommended that infectious myxoma be treated due to:

  • high infectivity of the virus,
  • long-term persistence of unsightly skin lesions (up to 2 years in adults),
  • risk of complications such as secondary bacterial skin infection, conjunctivitis, and spontaneous scarring.

Treatment of molluscum contagiosum consists of:

  • antiseptics and creams containing salicylic acid and potassium hydroxide, among others,
  • treatments such as cryotherapy, curettage, electrocoagulation and laser therapy (CO2 laser).
