Seborrhoeic warts

Seborrhoeic warts are a benign skin lesion that occurs in more than 90% of people over the age of 60. Seborrhoeic warts can appear anywhere on the body, although they are usually located on the trunk, upper extremities, face (including the eyelids), and scalp.

Seborrhoeic warts do not cause pain, itching or burning. However, they can be a serious aesthetic problem, especially when located on the face and eyelids.

Seborrhoeic warts have a varied appearance:

  • flat or convex lump that is well demarcated from healthy skin and appears to be stuck to the skin’s surface,
  • 1 mm to several centimeters in diameter,
  • yellow, gray, light brown, dark brown, black or multicolored,
  • surface smooth, waxy or papillose,
  • occur singly or in groups in specific locations on the body, e.g. on the scalp, under the breasts, along the spine, in the groin.

Causes of seborrhoeic warts on the skin

It is not known why seborrhoeic warts appear with skin aging. Although they are referred to as "seborrhoeic" they do not arise from the sebaceous glands, nor are they associated with sebum. Seborrhoeic warts are known to occur in greater numbers on the skin as the years go by, and the following factors promote their formation:

  • sunburn or dermatitis,
  • rubbing the skin can cause lumps to appear in the folds,
  • appearance of lentigines on the skin,
  • genetic predisposition,
  • epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (used to treat cancer).

Diagnosis of seborrhoeic warts

Although seborrhoeic warts do not require treatment, it is a good idea to consult a dermatologist about the skin lesion due to the fact that:

  • Seborrhoeic warts often look like one type of skin cancer,
  • Skin cancer can develop within a seborrhoeic warts.

The physician will make the correct diagnosis of the skin lesion by performing a dermatoscopy or biopsy with histopathological examination.

Treatment of seborrhoeic warts

The unsightly appearance of seborrhoeic warts on the skin can cause great discomfort to the Patient. Sometimes protruding lumps attach to clothing or jewelry causing soreness and skin irritation. In such situations, it is recommended to remove the troublesome lesions.

Methods used to remove seborrhoeic warts include:

  • ablative laser surgery,
  • cryotherapy,
  • curettage and/or electrocoagulation.

Both cryotherapy and curettage or electrocoagulation carry the risk of leaving an unsightly scar on the skin.
