Rosacea

Rosacea is a common, chronic skin condition that usually develops on the face. It usually affects fair-skinned people between the ages of 40 and 60. It is characterized by constant redness of the skin, small nodules and purulent pustules.

Rosacea is not contagious, nor does it pose a health risk to the Patient. However, the constant redness of the face can be very bothersome and significantly reduce the quality of life of a person struggling with this chronic disease. Currently there are effective ways to reduce the symptoms of acne rosacea, which we successfully use in the Zakrzewscy Clinic.

What causes rosacea

The cause of rosacea is not fully understood. Genetic factors, environmental factors, and the immune system are thought to play a role in the development of the disease. However, there are many factors that can cause rosacea to flare up. These include alcohol, exercise, hot and cold temperatures, hot drinks, spicy foods, and stress, among others.

What are the symptoms of rosacea

The onset of rosacea is often the appearance of a tendency of the face to redden suddenly. After some time, a marked erythema is seen on the face, which may be accompanied by small, dilated vessels, nodules and purulent pustules. Occasionally, facial lymphedema may also occur, especially around the eyes. In some cases there is an overgrowth of sebaceous glands on the nose causing enlargement and redness of the nose (called rhinophyma).

Can rosacea be cured

Rosacea cannot be completely cured. However, there are effective therapies to reduce the erythema and pimples on the face. The effectiveness of rosacea treatment depends largely on the Patient’s adherence to the dermatologist’s recommendations regarding taking prescribed medications, proper skin care, and avoiding factors that aggravate symptoms.

Treatment methods for rosacea

Acne rosacea encompasses many different symptoms that may require several different forms of therapy to achieve satisfactory treatment results. Treatments as well as oral and topical medications are used to reduce the inflammation of the skin manifested by erythema, papules and pimples on the face.

Untreated rosacea progresses from redness, to small papules and pustules, to permanent, painful erythematous lesions. Beginning treatment at an early stage of rosacea development allows for effective minimization of bothersome symptoms of the disease.

To treat the symptoms of rosacea, it is used:

  1. Pharmacological treatment.
  2. Laser treatments.
  3. Treatments using professional dermocosmetics.
  4. Chemical peelings.
  5. Treatments to aid in skin regeneration.
  6. Proper skin care.
  7. Patient avoidance of factors that cause facial erythema.

Advantages of laser therapy for the treatment of rosacea symptoms

Laser therapy with V Laser and Discovery Pico Plus lasers is a safe method that:

  • significantly improves skin condition in a short period of time, reducing troublesome erythema
  • carries a minimal risk of complications
  • is almost painless
  • does not require a long recovery period.

Procedure of erythema treatment with laser

At the beginning of the treatment the physician covers the treated skin area with a special cooling-conducting gel to minimize possible pain reactions of the skin. Then the physician puts the head of the V Laser device to the affected skin and illuminates the erythema. V Laser is very precise – the laser beam reaches the affected area precisely, without disturbing the surrounding tissues. This makes the treatment safe and comfortable for the Patient. After the treatment the physician applies a soothing preparation on the treated area.

Recovery after laser treatment of rosacea symptoms

After V laser treatment, you may experience short-term side effects such as:

  • Swelling at the treated site
  • Small scabs that fall off after 5-7 days.

Contraindications to the treatment

Laser therapy should not be performed in the following cases:

  • pregnancy
  • lactation
  • skin infections at the site of treatment
  • herpes
  • active cancer
  • epilepsy
  • xanthelasma
  • psoriasis, vitiligo
  • tendency to scarring
