Adult acne

Adult acne (acne tarda) is a disease that affects people of all ages. Acne lesions are not limited to the face and neck, but may also appear on the back, shoulders, or chest. Adult acne often requires different treatment methods than acne that occurs in teenagers.

Acne is not dangerous to the Patient’s health, but due to unsightly pimples it can be a serious aesthetic problem and a big psychological burden. Currently there are effective methods for treating adult acne, which we successfully use in the Zakrzewscy Clinic.

Causes of adult acne

Acne in adulthood affects women more often than men. The most common causes of acne include:

  • hormonal imbalance in the body, for example during pregnancy, menopause or after stopping birth control pills
  • stress and the associated excessive production of androgens in the body
  • genetic predisposition
  • hair and skin care products that clog pores in the skin
  • medications used
  • unrecognized medical condition of the body.

How adult acne is diagnosed

Adult acne is diagnosed based on the clinical signs of skin lesions. During the diagnosis, the dermatologist evaluates the type of pimples, the severity of the acne, and its location on the body, and then determines the optimal treatment plan with the Patient.

Adult acne treatment methods

The treatment of adult acne depends on factors such as:

  • type of eczema
  • location of pimples
  • treatment options used to date
  • how long a person has been struggling with acne
  • Patient’s age
  • other skin changes caused by acne, such as dark spots or scars.

Treating adult acne involves creams and ointments that are applied to the blemishes and topical therapies such as:

  • laser or light therapy
  • therapy using corticosteroids that are injected into the affected areas.

Complementing dermatological treatment is the use of a proper diet.

Adult acne treatment with laser

A safe and successful treatment for adult acne is laser treatment. Irradiating the skin lesions with a laser beam significantly reduces acne blemishes, but for a better treatment effect the physician may also prescribe topical medications applied to the skin. The results of laser therapy are generally long-lasting, although some Patients may need to repeat the treatment once or twice a year.

After your laser acne treatment, you may experience redness and swelling at the treatment site. Some Patients may also experience minor pain and burning sensations at the treatment site. The redness, swelling, and pain usually resolve within a few hours or the next day.

It is important to make sure that the laser treatment is performed by a physician with experience in this type of treatment and using modern equipment. If an untrained person performs the procedure, skin burns, blisters and scarring may occur.
