Tattoo removal

Safe tattoo removal is possible in a dermatologist's office equipped with the latest generation of laser, which specialists operate. Nowadays, lasers have largely replaced other methods of tattoo removal because:

  • They are safe and effective
  • several treatments are often enough to remove the tattoo completely
  • They can remove red and green ink colors until recently considered indelible.

Although modern laser technology minimizes the risk of complications for the patient, the procedure's results still largely depend on the skills and experience of the person carrying out the procedure, the doctor. Therefore, it is recommended that tattoo removal be carried out in a reputable dermatology and aesthetic medicine clinic, where qualified staff and modern equipment are a guarantee of safety and effectiveness of the procedure.

How does the tattoo removal procedure work?

The tattoo removal procedure involves breaking down the pigment under the skin with a laser beam. The laser pulse heats the ink particles causing them to break down into microscopic particles that are then removed from the body. After the procedure, the doctor protects the irradiated skin area with a sterile protective film.

In Zakrzewscy Clinic, a doctor's consultation precedes the tattoo removal procedure. The doctor introduces the patient to the details of the procedure and answers any questions. Then, a numbing cream is applied to the area covered by the tattoo, and the patient may also be given infiltration anesthesia. Thanks to anesthesia administration, the removal of the tattoo does not cause any pain.

Depending on the tattoo size and the number of colors used, the procedure takes from a few to several minutes. The tattoo is removed using the latest generation picosecond laser Discovery Pico Plus in our Clinic. Thanks to the high precision of the picosecond laser, the tattoo ink is broken down into tiny particles that the body can quickly remove. The high strength and precision of the laser pulse guarantee complete tattoo removal in almost every case and a short convalescence after the procedure.

How many sessions does it take to remove a tattoo?

The tattoo removal procedure requires several sessions to allow the body to remove the broken down pigment and regenerate. The number of sessions depends on the following factors:

  • the age of the tattoo
  • the size of the tattoo
  • the location of the tattoo
  • the color and type of ink used for the tattoo
  • the depth of injection of the ink
  • the density of the ink.

After each session, the tattoo gets lighter and lighter until it disappears completely.

In Zakrzewscy Aesthetic Medicine and Dermatology Clinic, removing a black tattoo requires, on average, 6-8 sessions. However, in the case of a colorful tattoo, about 10 sessions are needed to be performed 8 weeks apart. There are cases when more treatments are needed. We also perform partial tattoo removal if the patient wants to cover the old tattoo with a new one. In that case, usually, 2 laser procedures are sufficient.

What are the side effects of tattoo removal?

Tattoo removal treatment has no long-term side effects if carried out using a modern laser and by someone experienced in this procedure. After the procedure, erythema and swelling may occur and disappear after a few days.

If the procedure is performed incompetently or the equipment is of an old generation, the following complications may occur:

  • light and dark spots at the site of the removed tattoo
  • permanent, unaesthetic scars
  • changes in skin texture
  • burns and wounds
  • remains of ink under the skin
  • soreness in the area after the procedure.

What are the contraindications?

Most people can safely remove a tattoo using a laser. However, those who take medication on a permanent basis or suffer from serious health problems should inform their doctor before the procedure.

Contraindications to the treatment are as follows:

  • pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • recent suntan
  • active skin infections in the area to be treated
  • a newly got tattoo (at least 6 weeks must pass from the moment of getting the tattoo to the first treatment to remove it).
  • henna on the treatment area performed 4 weeks before the treatment or later.

What are the advantages of picosecond laser tattoo removal?

The Discovery Pico Plus picosecond laser is one of the most up-to-date lasers on the market for laser tattoo removal. This laser is particularly recommended for people who:

  • have a multi-colored tattoo
  • are afraid of pain
  • want to quickly obtain a light and smooth skin in the place of the removed tattoo.

Advantages of the Discovery Pico Plus picosecond laser:

  1. The use of photoacoustic rather than thermal waves significantly reduces the risk of skin overheating and scarring.
  2. The laser light's high precision and powerful beam allow the pigment to be broken down into microscopic particles. As a result, the doctor can remove even a large and multi-colored tattoo within a few sessions, whereas a single session only takes a few minutes.
  3. The possibility of removing any tattoo in practically any color.
  4. The possibility of removing tattoos covered with scars.
  5. Up to 60 - 80% faster tattoo removal than nanosecond lasers.

In Zakrzewscy Clinic, the tattoo removal procedure is carried out by Dr. Magdalena Stokowacka-Zakrzewska, a member of the elite association of laser therapy specialists ESLD.
