Skin aging

Skin aging is a natural phenomenon that progresses with age. Slowing down the production of collagen and elastin in the body makes the skin flabby, and the visible lines deepen to form wrinkles.

However, it is possible to effectively delay skin ageing by using appropriate anti-aging treatments and procedures which stimulate cells to increased production of components necessary to maintain skin firmness. In Zakrzewscy Clinic we successfully apply the latest therapies aimed at skin rejuvenation and inhibition of aging processes.

Types of skin aging

There are two types of aging processes:

  1. Intrinsic, or spontaneous or chronological affects the skin of the entire body, including areas protected from the sun.
  2. External affects selected areas of the body and is caused by constant exposure of the skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, smoking, and environmental pollutants.

Who is affected by this process?

Internal aging affects everyone regardless of skin type. External skin aging affects people who are often exposed to cigarette smoke, heavy air pollution, and prolonged sun exposure (called sun damage or photoaging of the skin).

What causes skin aging?

Intrinsic aging is defined by clinical, histologic, and physiologic changes that affect sun-protected areas of skin in older individuals.

The following factors influence the aging process:

  1. Ultraviolet radiation, which attacks the integrity of the skin by damaging the DNA of cells.
  2. Menopause. Signs of skin aging appear earlier in women than in men, which is attributed to the loss of the protective effects of estrogen when a woman enters menopause.
  3. Smoking accelerates skin aging because:
  • nicotine narrows blood vessels, reducing the amount of oxygen and nutrients that reach cells in the blood
  • many chemicals in tobacco smoke degrade collagen and elastin
  • the heat generated by a burning cigarette and the movement of facial muscles while smoking contribute to the formation of wrinkles
  • chemicals, such as nitrosamines and tar, are carcinogens.
  1. Diet has an impact on the skin aging process. It is known that:
  • fruits, vegetables, legumes, herbs and teas contain antioxidant compounds that are beneficial to the skin
  • high levels of vitamin C and increased intake of linoleic acid reduce wrinkles, dryness and skin atrophy
  • consumption of vegetables, olive oil, fish and legumes protects the skin from the effects of excessive sun exposure
  • consuming high amounts of fats and carbohydrates increases the risk of early development of wrinkles and skin atrophy
  1. Immune dysfunction. Skin aging can be a symptom of diseases related to immune deficiency, immunosuppressive agents, and chronic stress.

Clinical features and signs of skin aging

With intrinsic aging, the skin becomes dry, pale, smooth, thin, translucent, wrinkled, and flabby. The degree of pigmentation of spontaneously aging skin is small and regular compared to skin undergoing photoaging. Benign neoplasms such as sebaceous hyperplasia and cherry angiomas appear on aging skin.

In the case of external aging, the process of skin aging involves the area exposed to the sun or other harmful external factors. Therefore, signs of external skin aging usually appear on the face, neck, and shoulders. Photodamage causes skin roughness, depigmentation, age spots, telangiectasias, deep wrinkles, and the development of benign and malignant skin cancers. Pigmented lesions include diffuse macules, freckles, lentigines and seborrheic keratosis planus.

How is the diagnosis made?

Features of aging skin are diagnosed clinically. Suspicious lesions such as growing papules or non-healing wounds require biopsy and histopathologic examination.

How to stop skin aging?

The method of reducing the signs of skin aging depends on the type of skin lesion. For skin cancers, treatment most often includes surgical excision of the lesion, or cryotherapy and topical treatment.

For dry and pigmented skin, moisturizers, alpha hydroxy acids, vitamin C, lipoic acid, soy isoflavones and retinoid creams are used. The use of these therapeutic and care agents regularly and for a long time reduces dryness of the skin, the number of fine wrinkles and evens out pigmentation.

There are many treatments to rejuvenate skin affected by photoaging. The most popular of these are:

  • use of fillers such as hyaluronic acid or polytetrafluoroethylene to reduce facial wrinkles
  • Botulinum toxin injections to reduce wrinkles and deep furrows
  • laser treatment of blood vessels and sclerotherapy to remove hemangiomas and visible blood vessels from the face
  • Skin resurfacing treatments such as dermabrasion, chemical peelings or laser skin resurfacing
  • Plastic surgery to remove unnecessary skin laxity, including surgical or laseroplasty of baggy eyelids and facelift.
