Laser hair removal for transgender people
Hair on the head, body and face is an important part of human identity, reflecting membership in a certain group, conveying information about values or aesthetic preferences. For transgender and non-binary people, the appearance of hairstyle and body hair is of great importance due to emotional aspects and social integration. Getting a haircut or growing hair can be part of transgender people's transitions, as can getting rid of selected facial and body hair or, on the contrary, pursuing hair growth in those areas, for example, by taking hormones. Non-binary people may also seek to get rid of hair on certain parts of the body and face, which has to do with their sense of identity or personal aesthetic preferences. Hair removal is often a key step in the process of personal transformation and a means to express one's true identity. Hair removal can be a deeply personal experience, providing relief and affirming a sense of alignment with one's true self. That's why it's so important to choose the right hair removal method for satisfactory results.
Laser hair removal is a frequently considered choice by transgender and non-binary people for several reasons that can make it an attractive option for self-identification and identity expression.
● Permanence of results: Laser hair removal can offer long-lasting results, which is crucial for those who want to get rid of hair for the long term. For transgender people undergoing gender reassignment, long-lasting hair reduction can be important to their sense of identity and comfort in their relationship with their bodies.
● Comfort and convenience: The gender reassignment process can sometimes be difficult and challenging. For some people, being able to avoid frequent shaving, painful mechanical hair removal, side effects in the form of irritation, ingrown hairs or inflammation is a very important issue that positively affects their physical and psychological comfort.
● Reduction of gender dysphoria: Gender dysphoria, a discrepancy between the gender with which one identifies and one's assigned biological sex, often accompanies transgender people. Hair removal with laser hair removal can help reduce this dysphoria through conformity to one's internal gender identity.
It is worth emphasizing, however, that the decision to undergo laser hair removal should be well thought out, and that a person interested in this procedure should consult a professional who will discuss the therapy thoroughly. Each person has individual needs and preferences, so it is important to make a decision that best suits one's own identity and comfort.

Indications
Laser hair removal is a treatment for anyone who wants to remove unwanted hair regardless of its location. The most important indications for the procedure include:
- facial hair removal and eyebrow shaping.
- depilation of the intimate area, including when preparing for vaginoplasty.
- depilation of the intimate area and the skin that will serve as material for phalloplasty
- precise modeling of facial hair
- depilation of selected parts of the body, such as the chest, back, legs, abdomen and others
- the desire to eliminate the problem of ingrown hairs and irritation.
Course of treatment
Before each treatment, the specialist conducts a thorough medical interview with the patient in order to establish a treatment plan, rule out contraindications and discuss concerns. The skin undergoing treatment is cleansed. A gel is applied to the area to be depilated and the specialist proceeds with depilation by applying the laser head to the skin. For depilation of intimate areas, the patient wears a robe and disposable underwear. To ensure comfort, the skin can be exposed in fragments. The staff at Zakrzewscy Clinic is committed to a positive patient experience, creating a relaxing and friendly atmosphere.
The procedure does not cause much discomfort, but Patients with a low pain threshold may opt for an anesthetic ointment. Thanks to the cooling system, the heat emitted by the device is minimized, which is especially important when epilating extremely delicate areas.
Technology
Zakrzewscy Clinic uses a device for laser hair removal that combines three wavelengths - alexandrite laser, diode laser and neodymium-yag laser, which allows hair depilation regardless of its color (the laser is not effective only for white and gray hair) and the complexion of the Patient. Modern lasers are equipped with cooling systems, increasing the comfort of the treatment and heads covering large treatment spots, which translates into shorter single sessions. Laser therapy is a method characterized by a high degree of safety and effectiveness in removing unwanted hair.
The laser's action is based on the emission of a high-energy light beam, which is absorbed by melanin, a pigment found in the hair follicle. The heat destroys the hair follicle and the stem cells involved in the formation of new hair. During each treatment, only a portion of the hair follicles in a given area of the body can be destroyed, because the laser energy is absorbed only by hair in the growth phase - they have the most melanin and are most strongly connected to the matrix.
Effects
A series of treatments allows long-term removal of unwanted hair regardless of its color, as well as the patient's complexion, with the exception of gray and very light blond hair. Depending on the original purpose of laser therapy, results may include:
- smooth skin without irritation,
- perfectly modeled beard/eyebrows,
- skin preparation for vaginoplasty and phalloplasty.
The number of sessions required is an individual issue, as it depends on the type of hair and its current stage of growth. Most often, 8 treatments are recommended, repeated at intervals of 4 to 6 weeks for depilation of facial skin and 6 to 8 weeks for depilation of other areas of the body. For this reason, the entire process can take several or even several months. During each treatment, the laser destroys the follicles of only those hairs that are in the growth phase on the body part in question. After completing the treatment to maintain the effects, a reminder treatment should be performed at least once a year.
Recovery
After the treatment, the skin may be reddened and sensitized. Periorbital swelling should disappear within a few days.
