Tricholab – diagnosis of alopecia

Are you struggling with excessive hair loss and looking for professional help in treating alopecia?

With help comes a precise TrichoLAB trichoscopic examination, which allows for accurate diagnosis and selection of appropriate treatment. It is currently one of the most precise, accurate methods that allows to accurately diagnose the type of alopecia.

In our clinic the TrichoLAB examination is performed by a dermatologist using a video dermatoscopy from FotoFinder Systems. During the examination the physician takes a series of high quality photos of the Patient’s scalp, which are then sent to a specialized TrichoLAB laboratory for detailed evaluation. After several days the Patient receives a report, thanks to which the dermatologist makes a diagnosis and decision on the choice of treatment. Photos taken during the examination are documented – digitally recorded, which enables the analysis of changes over time and the assessment of treatment effectiveness.

Thanks to the use of innovative technology we are able to diagnose the causes of many problems the Patient is struggling with. TrichoLAB examination is completely painless, non-invasive and, what is important, does not require shaving of the scalp or taking hair.

Accurate diagnosis of the causes of hair loss is the first step toward effective hair loss treatment.

Indications for examination:

  • alopecia
  • chronic dandruff
  • oily scalp
  • itching of the scalp
  • burning of the scalp
  • changes on the scalp

Course of the examination

The duration of examination is approximately 20 minutes. You should not wash your head or use any hair care products on the day of examination. It is painless. During the examination the physician puts the videodermatoscope Bodystudio ATBM II on the Patient’s scalp and obtains a very high magnification image of the hair and scalp on the device’s screen. The most commonly used magnifications are 20x and 70x. The physician focuses on three areas during the examination: frontal, temporal and occipital. At each location, the physician takes 4 images with a very high quality Medicam® camera. Depending on the conditions and clinical suspicion, the examination is performed with or without immersion fluid ("dry"). The examination without the use of immersion fluid is particularly important in the case of Patients whose scalp exfoliation is to be assessed.

In the next stage the images are sent to a specialist laboratory TrichoLAB, where they are thoroughly analyzed. The analysis results are presented in a report on the basis of which the physician makes a diagnosis and adjusts the treatment. The images and detailed report are stored in electronic form, which enables a regular control of the course of treatment. It is completely non-invasive and does not require shaving of the scalp or taking hair.

Technology

Trichoscopy is a digital method of hair examination based on the technique of videodermatoscopy. The examination is performed by a dermatologist using FotoFinder videodermatoscope with TrichoLab module. It is an extremely technologically advanced platform consisting of a head with a camera connected to PC. The "heart" of the Fotofinder videodermatoscope is the technologically advanced Medicam camera, which enables:

  • taking pictures and videos in Full HD resolution
  • achieving high image sharpness (CrystalView Technology)
  • up to 400 times image magnification with built-in optical zoom
  • optimal irradiation of the examined area with polarized or non-polarized light
  • automatic image storage in FotoFinder

In trichoscopy, the hair shaft, hair follicle ostia and the surrounding skin are evaluated. The key issue in the analysis of scalp and hair is precision and obtaining a very accurate image of the examined area at high magnification. Thanks to the latest generation technology used in the FotoFinder system with TrichoLab module, trichoscopy performed in Zakrzewscy Clinic allows precise diagnosis of the scalp. It enables to differentiate various types of alopecia, especially androgenic alopecia with chronic telogenal alopecia, as well as to diagnose dystrophic, residual and broken hairs. This method also allows assessment of the activity of inflammatory diseases such as lichen planus pilaris (LPP) and discoid lupus erythematosis (DLE).

TrichoLab Trichoscopy enables objective assessment of the therapy effectiveness and disease management thanks to the option of automatic documentation of the examined area and possibility of comparative analysis during subsequent control examinations. Comparison of two images of the same area is reliable thanks to the innovative Ghost technology, which "overlays" the appropriate shots.

Effect

The examination is a very important part of the process of diagnosing scalp conditions. Once a diagnosis has been made based on the results, the dermatologist will suggest treatments for the condition and offer a treatment or follow-up plan.

Repeating the examination

Repeating the examination is recommended in order to evaluate hair growth and therapy effectiveness. The frequency with which the examination should be performed will be suggested by the physician depending on the disorder and type of therapy applied.
